How Volunteering with BACH Shaped Nilab Rahim’s Career

Nilab Rahim’s journey with Bay Area Community Health (BACH) began with a simple yet powerful motivation: to give back to the community that shaped her. “I began volunteering in my community because I believe in the power of collective effort to create meaningful change,” she says.

Growing up in an underserved area, Nilab experienced firsthand the impact that limited resources can have on one's health and quality of life. Volunteering became more than just a way to contribute—it became a calling.

“Supporting my community has always been more than a passion—it’s a purpose,” she shares. “It creates unity, fosters resilience, and helps close the gaps in care and resources.”

As a volunteer, Nilab shares how she immediately felt connected to BACH’s mission and the team she worked with. She participated in food drives, educational outreach, and health events—all of which helped her see the broader social determinants of health. “Each experience deepened my understanding of the barriers so many people face,” she says. “It reminded me that healthcare starts far beyond the clinic walls.”

Those moments, especially hearing people’s stories during outreach events, reaffirmed her decision to pursue a career as a physician assistant. “It’s about more than diagnosis and treatment—it’s about building trust and community,” she reflects.

When a staff position opened up, transitioning from volunteer to Community Health Worker I felt like the natural next step. “I was already aligned with the mission and familiar with the day-to-day efforts,” Nilab says. “Joining BACH as an employee allowed me to contribute in a deeper and more sustained way.”

Now, as she prepares to enter Physician Assistant (PA) school, Nilab credits her time at BACH for shaping the kind of provider she hopes to become—empathetic, informed, and community-driven.

When asked what advice she has for others considering a similar path, Nilab suggests “Lead with purpose and stay curious. Immerse yourself in the mission, ask questions, and let your passion be seen. It’s an incredible opportunity to grow while making a real impact.”
