This National Women’s Health Week, Take Charge — Because We Deserve Better
As we observe National Women’s Health Week, we celebrate the incredible progress made in women’s healthcare — and acknowledge that the journey is far from over.
“We’ve made tremendous strides from the days when women’s health concerns were dismissed as ‘hysteria,’ and dangerous treatments like bloodletting were the norm, but with recent setbacks, like the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, it’s clear: we cannot be complacent.”
Today, women have greater access to screenings and preventative care, but many still face barriers, stigma, and disparities in how their health is treated.
“Too many women are dying unnecessarily,” Dr. Jamena says. “We have the tools to prevent this — but we need to use them. I challenge every female to be part of the solution.”
Here’s how you can take charge of your health:
Get screened: Breast and cervical cancer can be caught early. Yet more than 13,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year.
Use available services: “We have programs right now — for sexual health, cancer screenings, and preventative care — that are underutilized,” says Dr. Jamena.
Be your own advocate: One in five women say their health concerns are dismissed. Don’t accept silence — ask questions, push for answers.
Support other women: Share resources, encourage your loved ones to get screened, and help uplift your community.
“Do not be a statistic,” Dr. Jamena adds. “Get your rightful treatment and preventative care. We women deserve it.”
