The Legacy of TransVision

  • TransVision was created in 2002 by Tri-City Health Center (now Bay Area Community Health) to respond to the deep health disparities faced by gender-diverse communities in Alameda County—especially trans women. The program was born from community pain and outrage following the murder of Gwen Araujo, a local teenager whose death underscored the urgent need for visibility, safety, and compassionate care.

Since its beginning, TransVision has offered a welcoming space for those across the gender spectrum, with a focus on supporting those most often pushed to the margins—particularly Black and Brown trans women and nonbinary individuals. At a time when few services were available, the program became a trusted place to access not only HIV prevention and care, but also hormone therapy, primary healthcare, behavioral health services, peer support, and assistance with legal name and gender marker changes.

What set TransVision apart then—and now—is that it has always been led by people within the community it serves. Staffed by trans and gender-expansive individuals, the program is rooted in respect, lived experience, and a belief that everyone deserves care that affirms their identity.

TransVision has also worked beyond the clinic walls. The team helped organize Alameda County’s first Trans Health Town Hall, developed trainings for providers and public officials, and built coalitions to strengthen awareness and inclusion in local systems. Through it all, TransVision has remained committed to honoring the lives and legacies of Gwen Araujo, Brandy Martell, and countless others whose stories continue to shape the work.

Today, TransVision continues to stand as a trusted source of care, advocacy, and support—a program shaped by and for the community, and a reminder of what’s possible when equity, dignity, and humanity guide the work.
