Discover Wellness at BACH’s Annual Ohana Health and Resource Fair

Join us this August at the Ohana Health and Resource Fair! It's an event that brings our community together to address health inequalities, especially among low-income and vulnerable groups. Carolina Arroyo-Solveson, our Community Engagement Manager at Bay Area Community Health (BACH), shares insights on what's in store for attendees.

The Ohana Health and Resource Fair was born out of a necessity to bridge gaps in healthcare access and resources, starting virtually during the 2020 pandemic. Since then, it has evolved into a crucial platform for promoting health equity.

"These events are pivotal for achieving health equity and addressing the needs of underserved populations," Carolina emphasizes.

At BACH, we not only offer health services but also address various factors affecting health, aiming to create a comprehensive approach to community well-being.

Events like the Ohana Health and Resource Fair provide vital health screenings and educate attendees on disease prevention and healthy living. This year, we're thrilled to partner with organizations such as Kaiser Permanente, Alameda County-WIC, the Newark Public Library, and the American Heart Association, among others, to enhance our community's well-being.

Expect a wide range of activities, including vision, dental, and chronic disease screenings, hula dancing, a musical instrument petting zoo for children, and a food demonstration promoting healthy eating. We're focusing on diabetes awareness, especially among Latino and African-American populations, with tools and information to help manage and prevent this chronic condition.

Last year's successful partnership with the Alameda County Public Library highlighted the potential for an even greater impact this year. We achieved 750 touchpoints and conducted 152 health screenings, and we hope to surpass these numbers and better address community needs this year. Based on community feedback and our past experiences, we've moved the event indoors to provide a more comfortable environment and obtain more accurate health readings.

Carolina shares a touching success story: "Last year, a family of five won a grand raffle prize. When they collected their prize, it was discovered that the father, who hadn't had health insurance, a medical home, or a checkup in a decade, was able to get MediCal and begin his journey toward better health."
