BACH Responds to First U.S. Case of Clade 1 Mpox: Protecting Our Community Through Vaccination, Education, and Care

Statement from Harsha Ramchandani, MD

Chief Medical Officer, Bay Area Community Health

On November 16, 2024, California health officials confirmed the first case of Clade 1 Mpox (Monkeypox), the strain responsible for outbreaks in Central and Eastern Africa, in the United States. According to the CDC, “The risk of Clade 1 Mpox to the public remains low.”

At Bay Area Community Health (BACH), we are committed to addressing this emerging health concern through proactive measures:

Providing Vaccines

We are coordinating efforts to make Mpox vaccines available at our clinics. Vaccination is a critical step in protecting high-risk populations. We are prioritizing access for individuals with known exposure or those at elevated risk of transmission.

Offering Education and Resources

Our healthcare teams are dedicated to informing the community about Clade 1 Mpox, including its symptoms, transmission risks, and prevention strategies. Educational materials will be distributed in multiple languages via our website and social media channels to ensure inclusivity and understanding.

Enhancing Clinical Response

In partnership with county public health departments, BACH clinics are prepared to diagnose, manage, and treat Mpox cases. Our staff is trained to recognize early symptoms and implement effective infection control measures to limit further spread.

We remain committed to safeguarding the health of our community. We encourage everyone to stay informed, practice preventive measures, and seek medical care if they suspect exposure. Together, we can navigate this challenge and strengthen public health resilience.
