National Birth Defects Awareness Month and Maternal Health Awareness Day
At Bay Area Community Health (BACH), we are dedicated to supporting mothers and families throughout their pregnancy journey. January marked National Birth Defects Awareness Month, and January 23 was Maternal Health Awareness Day—two important occasions that highlighted the importance of early care, preventive measures, and access to essential resources.
The Importance of Proactive Care
“It is important to be proactive instead of reactive as soon as you find out that you are pregnant by scheduling your prenatal appointment with your OB doctor,” says our Women’s Health Program Manager Linde Chea. “Early screenings can lead to early detection of any abnormalities before it is too late to get the help you need for your baby.”
BACH is here to help you every step of the way. We take most insurances and offer sliding scale fees to ensure care is accessible for all. Whether it’s your first pregnancy or your fourth, we believe every family deserves high-quality, affordable healthcare.
Programs and Resources Available Through BACH
To make healthcare accessible to everyone, regardless of income or immigration status, BACH offers several programs designed to meet diverse needs:
Family PACT: Comprehensive family planning services for eligible low-income men and women (under 200 percent of the federal poverty level).
Every Woman Counts – Cancer Detection Program (CDP): Free clinical breast exams, mammograms, pelvic exams, Pap tests, and case management services for eligible women. Treatment is also available through the Breast and Cervical Treatment Program (BCCTP).
Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program (CPSP): Designed for Medi-Cal pregnant women, CPSP provides care from the beginning of pregnancy through postpartum.
Why Early Prenatal Care Matters
Early and regular prenatal care visits are essential to monitor the health of both mom and baby. These appointments can help identify potential risks and provide education on maintaining a healthy pregnancy.
We’re here to provide:
Pregnancy and preconception counseling.
Nutrition and behavioral health counseling.
Breastfeeding support.
Referrals to programs like WIC for additional resources.
